An example of this type of Sextortion is where people are extorted with a series of nude images or video recordings of themselves with prostitutes or media shared on the Internet through “sexting” or sexual conduct in online video chat rooms.

Another example is the use of webcams as the main method of blackmail, especially for those who use webcams for online sex chat rooms and cybersex. This usually involves a Sextortion criminal posing as someone else, like an attractive young female initiating communication of a sexual nature with the victim. In this clever form of trickery, the Sextortionist simply shows a recorded video of a performer from a live cyber sex webcam site to message the victim at points in the video where the performer appears to be typing on the keyboard.
This gives the illusion to the victim that it is actually the performer in the video messaging them, while in reality, it is someone else who is setting them up for blackmail. This is the method most widely implemented by Sextortion criminals and it is very effective for obtaining sexually explicit material to be used for blackmailing the victim.

The victim is then persuaded to get naked in front of a webcam or mobile phone application, and may also be persuaded to engage in sexual behaviour such as masturbation, and talk in an explicit nature for maximum effect. The video exchange is then recorded by the Sextortion criminal who then reveals their true intent all along and demands money or other forms of payment. Depending on how damaging the sexual material is and how financially well off or well known the victim is, the price to buy off the criminal can be very high. This number can be in the tens of thousands of dollars in most cases.
The Sextortion criminal will threaten to publicly release the sexually explicit content video to online social media services as well as send it to family members, friends, and business associates of the victim if they do not comply. Sometimes threats to make false allegations of paedophilia against the victim are made as well. This is also known as webcam blackmail. Sextortion criminals will claim to be in possession of personal intimate pictures or sexual recorded videos. This damaging content is obtained through the computer’s webcam when the user was visiting pornographic sites and online sex chat rooms. They will demand payment in cash via bank transfer, Western Union, or even Bitcoin or other virtual currencies within 24 hours to stop them from releasing the damaging Sextortion material. Demands are typically for between $1000 and up to $10,000 or higher. The cybercriminals threaten to send the videos to the person’s “loved ones” unless they pay up. Police recommend that targets of the shakedown stay calm and refuse to pay because the blackmailers are usually bluffing and have no damaging material. But most of the time the evidence does exist, putting the victim in a very difficult situation.
The best way to avoid Sextortion is, of course, to never compromise yourself in such a manner.
